Breathe in Kyoto culture through the timeless charm of this machiya townhouse

Life through the eyes of Kyoto photographers

Here, in a Meiji built kyo-machiya townhouse stretching back through mat rooms (restored as much as possible to their original state) to a courtyard garden giving glimpses of the seasons, visitors can find a photo collection spanning some 50 years of Kyoto life, all taken by the photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno. The collection also includes photos by Katsuhiko’s children, Kayu and Hidehiko, who are both photographers, as well, which means visitors get to see a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse and photos of Kyoto taken by two generations of one family.
The permanent collection of some 50 photos includes seasons in all their blushing hues, shrines and temples, street life and days spent in the machiya townhouse.
Many of the exhibits have been blown up to giant size or as panoramic scenes to give a full account of the beauty of Kyoto, which is all the more poignant when absorbed amidst the simple arrangements of a traditional Kyoto home full of personal life and courtyard seasons.
