Life Connected by Water

Oceanless Kyoto basin has its own unique river culture. The enclosing mountains and their forests filter rain into streams that feed Kyoto rivers that in turn feed the Pacific Ocean. And, in the Kyoto Aquarium, there are 12 areas showing many of the life forms from upstream to downstream and on to the sea.
In the “Rivers of Kyoto” area, visitors will find aquariums reproducing the Kamogawa and Yura rivers. In the Kamogawa one, there are Japanese giant salamanders (special protected species). Likewise, visitors can watch fur seals and spotted seals and penguins swimming about. And, in the Sea of Kyoto area (a big tank) and the Beauty of Nature area, visitors can see small aquatic lifeforms, while the “Countryside of Kyoto” area recreates a hilly Kyoto landscape.
