A rendezvous with dynastic culture and Uji tea culture
In business since 1790, this well-established flagship store mainly deals in tea in a setting that incorporates “Kyoto garden”, “Kyoto light” and “Kyoto craftsmanship”.
With the intention of bringing Kyoto dynastic culture and Uji tea culture together, black granite and lattice work inside and out are made the most of in the building The interior decoration theme is “Kyoto garden”, which has been brought to life by the design of professor Hiromasa Amasaki, who has installed micro gardens expressing the spirit of tea on each floor. And, by adjusting the lighting for the exterior lattice work, “Kyoto light” comes to life like a giant Oriental lamp, which has turned the building into a Kyoto nighttime symbol.
And, as “Kyoto craftsmanship”, each floor is filled with works of artists like the National Treasure Yuzo Kondo (blue-and-white ceramics), Hyoji Kitagawa (Yusoku weaves), Shokosai Hayakawa (bamboo weaving), Tokio Hata (Yuzen dyeing), Kiyotsugu Nakagawa (woodworking), Akira Murayama (woodworking) and Uichi Shimizu (iron-glazed ceramics). Hence, the entire building is a gallery.
And, taking Uji tea as the theme, there are many skills that visitors can try out in hands-on tasters.
