Exhibiting modern fine art cored around works produced in Kansai
Although focusing on contemporary fine art from home and abroad, encompassing a diverse collection of works that includes paintings, woodblock prints, ceramics, sculptures, photographs and design works, the museum - amidst consideration given to the overall history of modern art in Japan - places great importance on the artists active in Kyoto and the entire Kansai area.
In the Collection Gallery on the 4th floor, rotation is the key, with exhibits like Japanese paintings, Western paintings, woodblock prints, sculpture, ceramics, lacquer ware, dyed fabrics, industrial arts and photographs being switched whenever necessary. A famous example of work on display here would be the collection by the woodblock artist Kiyoshi Hasegawa.
Other activities include holding workshops and lectures in conjunction with special exhibitions. And, depending on the time of year, the museum stays open at nighttime.
The 1st floor is equipped with free space and houses the museum shop and a café. This floor is open to the public free of charge.
