Mussée Gohki Endoh

Highlight
Painstaking studies of a single woman in the series “Nihon-no-Onna” (Japanese Woman), seemingly capturing her very thoughts

An artist of passion and belief

Endoh himself personally designed this museum and its facade, which is impressively redolent of a Greek temple. Every detail inside, from entrance hall to stair banister has been meticulously designed with Endoh’s contemporary flare. The collection boasts 2,000 or so pieces, spanning Endoh’s early work through to today, which are spread through display corners.
Endoh relentlessly creates art in order to scour his inner self as an individual searching for truth and for his own religious belief. Nearly all his works are created outdoors where the freshness of nature and the buzz of life resonate so intensely that Endoh finds himself painting and sketching in emotional awe of life around him. Yet, it sometimes takes him ten to 20 years to finish a painting, worked in thick, lucid oils. Alternatively, his sketches in pencil or charcoal and other designs in black paint surge with passion to the point where they go beyond design and leave the viewer perceiving life in mighty forms.
