Delve into the delightful world of classic confectionaries

This museum was founded by the long-established confectioners Tawaraya Yoshitomi to popularize the culture of Kyoto sweets - in other words, confectionaries defined by the influence of a city that was home to Emperors. The splendid approach and entrance - with glistening flagstones, ancient plumb trees redolent of Kinkakuji Temple and a stone washbasin - give this museum a feel of a machiya townhouse set off from the street. The confectionary exhibits are on the 2nd floor and the first floor is home to a tea room.
Visitors are greeted at the museum entrance by a display of brilliant sweets that were entered into the National Confectionary Exposition. And, in the actual museum, the exhibits range from written information on the history of Japanese sweets through to the recipe books, utensils and wooden molds passed down by generation upon generation of confectioners. Down on the 1st floor, refined surroundings await, with beautiful tables and chairs inviting you to partake in some refreshments created in the adjacent confectionary studio.
