Spring water feeding the “peach tree” well runs as it did centuries ago – soft and clean to taste

The taste of famed water enjoyed in a townhouse that was a sake brewery

Most people think of Fushimi when sake and Kyoto are mentioned. However, underground water in the Kamogawa River area south of the Imperial Palace is mighty fine and was once the supply for 150 sake-brewing houses in the vicinity, but for business and space needs they moved south to Fushimi.
This museum is the former brewing house of Kinshi-Masamune (founded in 1781), which moved its brewing business down to Fushimi in 1880 but has continued to carefully maintain this property to display the former principal residence and the tools of the sake trade.
Having survived a great fire in Kyoto in 1864, the building is a precious example of Edo architecture that houses brewery tools in the storehouse, fine examples of living quarters and office on the 1st floor and rooms and mushiko (insect cage) windows on the 2nd floor. The famous water can be drunk at the well and visitors can always relax in the museum bar and restaurant where stronger beverages and Japanese food are available too.
