The Greek Roman Museum

Highlight
Ancient Greece and Rome come alive in this museum with sculptures, ceramics and mosaics

Evoking thoughts of ancient peoples

The museum building is an elegant western-style residence in a quiet residential backstreet of Kyoto. Captivated by ancient Greek art, the husband-and-wife owners have built up an amazing collection of art pieces, the like of which cannot be seen anywhere else in Japan.
Visitors are greeted by a life-size statue of Hercules, a bust of First Caesar Augustus and a marble sculpture of a muse in the 1st floor hall.
The 2nd and 3rd floors are home to dress accessories and utensils from daily life from Etruria (ancient country in central Italy) and southern Italy some 2,700 years ago. Among these, there are black and red pots decorated with scenes from myths and the daily lives of the ancients. Thus, these floors set the mind ticking with thoughts of long-ago civilizations and their customs.
From the salon on the 4th floor, a beautiful view of surrounding mountains can be enjoyed with refreshments, and, in the museum shop, unusual goods from Greece are available.
