Kyoto Ceramic Center
As the old capital, Kyoto has been a leader of culture and ideas since the Heian period; yet, when it comes to Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware), there never has been a specific style, rather the ceramists of the city have continued reinventing their wares to reflect the trends and desires of each generation, by first taking orders from the affluent nobility and samurai families, the wealthy merchants, shrines and temples and now other buyers.
Located on Gojo-zaka, the original heart of Kiyomizu-yaki, the Kyoto Ceramics Center was built as a beacon to spotlight the ceramics of Kyoto and - to this day and into tomorrow - an alluring light continues to be shone at a level the public can appreciate.
Here, on the 1st floor, there is a permanent exhibition corner introducing the established artworks of famed Kyoto ceramicists and freshly innovative pieces rich in sensitivity by young, aspiring potters here in the city. The pieces can be handled and are all available for purchase. And, up on the 2nd floor, the Center has established a planned exhibition corner, where ceramic artists regularly hold solo shows, while other special exhibitions and collaborative events are also held here from time to time. In this way, the Center works hard to proactively support the local ceramic community.
